| Upgrading Geobase | |
| A project of upgrading Geobase system has been successfully completed. The project included an upgrading of the search engine and the data presentation on the screen, a new fixed informative card for each geographic unit, an extension of the series metadata card, and a higher exposure of data on intra-locality divisions: sub-quarters and statistical areas. A new chart module has been integrated into the data presentation as well as a Hebrew-English toggle that enables the user to switch between the languages in every screen. Geobase software platform has also been upgraded from Oracle 8i to Oracle 10g. | |
| The upgraded Geobase system will be presented in a seminar on "Spatial Statistics for Urban and Regional Planning" on Sunday, January 8, 2006, between 14:00-18:00, at Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University. The seminar is organized by ISDC in collaboration with the institute of Urban Studies. Invitations with a detailed program will be soon distributed. | |

| New data in GEOBASE | |
| Metropolitan areas - a new geographic layer | |
| Metropolitan statistics has been added to GEOBASE. First, the three metropolitan
areas of Tel-Aviv, Haifa and Beer-Sheva has been added, creating new geographical
layer. Each of them is divided into rings and sections. Tel-Aviv Met. composed of a
core, and 9 other sub-divisions; Haifa Met. consists of a core and 6 other parts while
the new Be'er-Sheva Met. is divided into 9 areas. The Central Bureau of Statistics
already publishes data for metropolitan areas and their sub-divisions and more data
figures can be expected in the future.
See 'Metropolin' in the main geographic menu and list of sub-divisions in the sub- menu. As of now, only population and labour force data has been updated for this layer. |

Sources of population growth: births, deaths and first settlement of new immigrants' for year 2002 |
|
| Local Economic activity | |
| The series of industry indices for districts, sub-districts and selected cities have been updated and now cover the years 1995-2002. The same updates have been done for the Surveys of Manufacturing series as well as for trade and services series originated in the VAT administration. | |
| Education | |
| The new series of Matriculation entitled in localities and in regional councils have been updated to 2002. Due to definition changes, the Central Bureau of Statistics publishes statistical figures for "Elementary Schools" rather than for Elementary Education and for secondary and intermediate schools rather than for post-primary education. Furthermore, there is no more separate reference to vocational and agricultural schools which now are included in the statistics for secondary and intermediate schools. Thus, few series of vocational and agricultural school have been closed. | |
| The source of all these data figures is Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. | |

| The current tracking system of GEOBASE provides only a vague picture of its usage. In order to get a better idea about users' characteristics, needs and expectations, a new user registration form has recently been launched. Please fill and submit the New User Signup Form. GEOBASE coordinator provides a password to every application. Please notice that FastAnalysis password is valid for accessing GEOBASE, so FastAnalysis users do not have to submit a new registration form. The username and password will be required by GEOBASE starting on April 28. | |
